Instructions

SET A TIMER OR TAKE NOTICE OF WHEN YOU START/END THIS ASSIGNMENT!

Read all, including the grading policy, before beginning the assignment. This is Option A. You can complete both Option A and B, or only one Option, for #006. Only click Start Assignment and submit a text box for the one you actually work on. For the other, simply 'Mark as Done' but do not start assignment/submit to show you are opting out.

If you like having a learning guide outline for your work, use this SLG Links to an external site.. The relevant section is V. Understanding Controlled Experiments. You can print or work it online- I always suggest hand-writing. If you'd like you can upload it to this assignment as evidence of your 'going beyond'. Otherwise, you can answer in the textbox.

  1. Do the matching activity '1 - Introduction: The Scientific Method". Study the list as much as you need to. Remember, the scientific method is not as straight-forward as this, but this is probably how you saw it in middle school. Another image of scientific method that better illustrates can be seen here: https://undsci.berkeley.edu/article/0_0_0/howscienceworks_02 Links to an external site. - I suggest looking at and mousing over the image to see how the non-linear process works.
  2. Complete the  “2 - Interactive Reading: A case study: The Link Between Cancer and Smoking.”
  3. SUMMARIZE: Write a very brief summary of what you learned in this section in the textbox or on the SLG (and upload into the textbox as a picture). Label it:  “2 - Interactive Reading: A case study: The Link Between Cancer and Smoking.” If you prefer to hand-write or do it on the learning guide linked at top, you can upload pictures.
  4. Read “Controlled Experiments: General Features. When you finish, take the multiple choice quiz (with the same title).
  5. Work on the flashcards that cover the vocabulary about the scientific method and controlled experiments. Be very strict with yourself. Only mark “Got it” if you really understand the term. Otherwise, give yourself more practice.
  6. Read “5 - A controlled experiment to test the smoking/cancer connection. Most of this reading is in the form of a multiple-choice quiz. Click the box when you’re done.
  7. Read " 6- What Happened Next”
  8. SUMMARIZE: Write a very brief summary of what you learned in this section in the textbox or on the SLG (and upload into the textbox as a picture). Label it: "6 - What Happened Next".
  9. Take the quiz entitled “The Scientific Method and Designing Experiments.”
  10. Complete the “Scientific Method Song, Interactive Lyrics”. Feel free to watch the video after you attempt the lyrics.
  11. Pause and think about what you now understand about how experiments work. This should include everything you know (both from this tutorial, and from prior knowledge). Write your brief summary of your understanding in the space below, and ask any questions as comments, or by highlighting them in red so I notice.

Grading Policy

You earn 'Complete' for having the Qwizcards completed, which I can view on my dashboard, and a response in the textbox (either picture of written notes/this SLG Links to an external site. or typed). I have given you a framework for your answer below that you can copy/paste. Feel free to keep this as 'in progress' in a word doc or something so you don't lose progress.
